Alan Grihault was brought up in Devon, England, and attended Queen Elizabeth's School, Crediton, before going to Harper Adam’s Agricultural College in Shropshire.
He then had to do National Service in the Royal Army Medical Corps, after which he trained as a teacher at Kesteven Teacher Training College and, after graduating in 1960, went on to teach at several schools in Derbyshire.
in the same county, and later became a lecturer in Education at St. Luke’s Teacher Training College
in Exeter, Devon.
He later had postings abroad for organisations such as the British Council (BC),
the Overseas Development Administration (ODA),
Department for International Development (DfID) and the European Union (EU).
in Kenya (twice), Malawi, Mauritius, Botswana, Seychelles, Zambia, Sierra Leone,
Vanuatu and Swaziland as a Teacher and Resource Teacher Trainer,
Education Adviser, Examiner and Curriculum Developer.
and enjoys presenting programmes on children's television,
as well as writing books on Dodos and Pirates.
He has three websites which he hopes will interest, entertain and educate
children and adults in natural history, pirate history and
the teaching of primary mathematics.
